Literacy: This week our essential question was "What ideas can we get from nature?" Scientists observe nature and come up with new ideas. Sometimes scientists imitate what they see in nature. These ideas help people in many different ways. The texts we read included "Ideas from Nature", "Bats did it First", "Big Ideas from Nature", and "Perdix Invents the Saw". We worked on the comprehension strategy: summarize, the comprehension skill: main idea and key details, the genre: expository text, and the vocabulary strategy: root words. Our grammar lessons taught us about future-tense verbs, and our spelling words strengthened our knowledge of the prefixes pre-, dis-, and mis-. |
Science: We have been learning about "Patterns in the Sky". We learned that the Earth rotates on its axis. This happens every 24 hours and causes day and night. The Earth also revolves around the Sun every 365 1/4 days which causes seasons. We also learned about Moon phases and constellations of stars. We played a Kahoot to review this unit, and took our test on Thursday. We will start learning about the planets in the Solar System next week. |
Social Studies:
We learned who Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was and how he was a peaceful leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Each student wrote their dream for a better world and designed a picture to go with it.
We also learned about Inauguration Day and tied that in with what we learned about Government.

Math: We have been learning about place value with very large and very small numbers. We learned how to write numbers less than one in the form of a fraction, mixed number, and decimal. We solved place value problems and compared numbers to the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths digit. We took our Unit 5 test. These have been corrected and sent home. We started Unit 6 this week which will teach us about Geometry. We learned about the difference between a line segment, ray, and line. We also learned about parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines. |
Future World Changer:
Haylee Ostendorf was our featured "Future World Changer" this week. Haylee has two sisters, is very artistic, and likes to build with Legos. A person from history she would like to meet is Steve Irwin because he worked with animals. In Social Studies she would like to learn about Pocahontas because she finds her interesting. Haylee would like to visit Australia. Her favorite foods are chicken pot pies, grapes, cantaloupe, and apples. He favorite seasons are fall and spring, and she likes to jump on her trampoline. If Haylee could have a super power she would choose speed or invisibility. She had fun going to the rodeo in Montana with her family last year. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!
