We spent some time this week learning about The Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival. This is a 15 day celebration which will begin on February 12th this year. 2021 is the year of the Ox. (There are 12 different animals on the Lunar calendar.) The Lunar New Year is an important holiday for many countries. During the festivities ancestors are honored, ceremonies and parades are held, and people get together to welcome the new year with customs that bring good luck, good fortune, wealth, and happiness. The new year is celebrated with dragon dances, lion dances, gift exchanging, and fireworks. It typically ends with a lantern festival. |
Math: This week we did more work with congruent figures, flips, slides, and turns, made 8-point designs and colored them with symmetry, explored decimal designs, and learned about 3-dimensional figures. We identified the faces, bases, edges, vertices, and the apex (if applicable) of pyramids, prisms, cones, cubes, spheres, and cylinders. We reviewed the geometry concepts in Unit 6 and took our test on Wednesday. These will be graded and sent home next week. |
Science:
We shared our planet research projects, reviewed the unit with a Kahoot game, and took our test on the Solar System this week. We will display our projects in the hallway next week and they will be sent home after they have been shared. The students can be very proud of their hard work and their final projects! Tests were scored and sent home on Wednesday.

Future World Changer:
Shawn Worms was featured as our "Future World Changer" this week. If the post office made a stamp with him on it, he would be playing baseball because that is his favorite sport. He also likes to go fishing and hunting and spend time with his family. In social studies Shawn would like to learn more about the Vietnam war because his grandpa was in it. A person from history he would like to meet is Abraham Lincoln. He would like to visit California because it is warm there. Shawn's favorite foods are tacos and pizza, his favorite color is blue, his favorite animal is a leopard, his favorite subject is math, and his favorite season is summer. If Shawn could have any super power he would choose to be able to fly above the world. He told us about his family and his baby deer and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!

We had our Valentine's Day party on Wednesday and were able to have fun while still social distancing. We also did some activities for "I Love to Read" month. We are still in need of toilet paper and paper towel tubes, so please send those to school as they become available. Thanks in advance!
