Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How can we reuse what we already have?" Almost everything we use can be recycled. Reusing things helps keep our Earth clean. We all should reuse and recycle what we can. It is also important to practice conservation of our resources. The texts we read included "The School Garden", "The New Hoop", "Bravo, Tavo!", and "Trash into Art". We worked on the comprehension strategy: summarize, the comprehension skill: point of view, the genre: realistic fiction, and the vocabulary strategy: homographs. Our grammar lessons taught us more about subject and object pronouns, and our spelling words had the inflectional endings -ed, -ing, and -s. |
Math: This week we practiced solving number stories involving fractions. We also reviewed many fraction concepts and took our end of unit test. These will be corrected and sent home early next week. We started Unit 9 which will expand the students' learning of multiplication and division. It is even more important now for the children to have mastery of their basic multiplication and division facts as they will be applying these facts to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers. Unit 9 has four main areas of focus: *To multiply and divide with multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000 *To use mental math to multiply *To share money *To find products of 2-digit numbers. We began this unit by using animal weights to solve multiplication problems involving multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts on a daily basis whenever possible. |
Social Studies: We learned about the Terracotta Army that Emperor Qin had made to protect him in the afterlife. There were over 8,000 life size statues of soldiers and no two are alike, 150 life size horses, and 130 chariots with 520 horses buried with the emperor. These were accidentally discovered in a farm field in 1974. We also learned about the Forbidden City where 24 different Chinese emperors lived over the course of 500 years. We learned about many inventions which came from China, and about many dynasties and events that took place in the history of China. The children started working on a Jamboard mural to show the interesting things they learned about Ancient China. |
Future World Changer: Promise Yellowbird was our featured student this week. If they made a stamp for Promise it would have a picture of the world on it. A place she would like to visit is Brazil. Two people from history she would like to learn about in social studies are Hellen Keller and Anne Frank. A person from history Promise would like to meet is George Washington. Her favorite season is winter, favorite food is mashed potatoes with gravy, favorite animal is a dolphin, favorite colors are pink, yellow, and brown, and her favorite subjects are reading and math. Promise likes to read Junie B. Jones books. If she could have a super power, she would chose to be able to fly or teleport. She shared some of her favorite things, including her owl from the fair, seashells, and rubber band bracelet bands. She told us about her family and answered questions from her classmates. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"! |
