Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How do people from different cultures contribute to a community?" There are many different ways to share culture with a community. Some ways are sharing food, types of music and dance, and stories. When people in a community share their culture, they contribute to the community. Sharing culture helps people learn from each other. The texts we read included "Faith Ringgold: Telling Stories Through Art", "Room to Grow", "Gary the Dreamer", "Sharing Polkas and Pitas", and our guided reading story "Judy Baca". We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: sequence, the genre: narrative nonfiction, and the vocabulary strategy: compound words. Our grammar lessons taught us about subjects and predicates, and our spelling words ended in silent e. |
Math: This week we explored number patterns using frames and arrows and number grid puzzles. We learned how to calculate elapsed time and started our Sunrise / Sunset record project. We took our Unit 1 math test on Thursday and started Unit 2 on Friday which will focus on adding and subtracting whole numbers. We reviewed fact families and number families as well as the relationship between addition and subtraction. We continue to work on Moby Max to increase our fact fluency. |
Social Studies: We started learning about Government this week. We learned that the Constitution is our most important law. It protects the rights of citizens. We talked about our rights and responsibilities as citizens. Our Government has three branches. We learned about two of them this week. The Executive Branch is made up of the President, Vice President, and the President's Staff. The responsibilities of the Executive Branch include carrying out the laws, approving or vetoing bills, and leading the Military. This branch works from the White House. The Legislative Branch is made up of Congress which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives. Their responsibilities include introducing bills and writing laws. This branch works in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. |
We took some time this week to share our pirate stories and treasure maps from our "Learning from Home" day. Below are the photos of the children who wanted to share with the class. Our next "Learn from Home" day will be Wednesday, October 14th. I will not be sending a weekly update next week as the children will only be in school for two days. There will be no spelling words or test next week. We will review some reading skills and strategies, start writing a personal narrative story, and continue with our math and social studies lessons. We will also draw personal murals to go with our guided reading story.
