Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "How do we get what we need?" People meet their needs in different ways. We can use money to buy the things we need. We can also barter, or trade to get the things we need. The texts we read this week included "Wei and the Golden Goose", "Juanita and the Beanstalk", "Clever Jack Takes the Cake", and "When Corn Was Ca$h". We worked on the comprehension strategy: summarize, the comprehension skill: point of view, the genre: fairy tale, and the vocabulary strategy: root words. Our grammar lessons taught us about singular and plural pronouns, and our spelling words taught us about compound words.

Math:
This week we did more work with equivalent fractions. We learned to multiply a fraction by another fraction that equals 1 whole to get an equivalent fraction. We also learned to compare fractions by cross multiplying to determine which one is larger and which one is smaller. We learned about fractions that are greater than one and identified and wrote them as improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also learned and played some new fraction games and put together fraction books.

Social Studies:
This week we learned about three major religions or philosophies that shaped many of the ideas and history of Ancient China. Taoism believes that people should be one with nature. The idea of Yin and Yang, balancing forces, comes from Taoism. Confucianism focused on treating others with respect, politeness, and fairness. Buddhism believed in a concept called Karma. Karma says that all actions have consequences, so actions you take today will come back to you in the future. We also learned about lucky numbers and the five primary Chinese colors. Eight is considered the luckiest number because the word for "eight" in Chinese sounds like the word for "prosper". Yellow was regarded as the most beautiful of all the colors by the Ancient Chinese and was reserved for the emperor and his family. Red is an important color in Chinese culture. We talked about Ancient Chinese architecture and learned about The Great Wall of China. The Great Wall was build to keep invaders out, and extends over 13,000 miles across the northern part of China.

Future World Changer:
Brayden Hinnenkamp was our featured student this week. If they made a stamp with Brayden on it, he would be throwing his football down the field. A person from history he would like to meet is George Washington. Brayden would like to learn more about geography in social studies. He would like to visit many places, but especially Mexico because it is hot there. Brayden likes chocolate and peanut M & M's, clouds in the sky, and frosted mini wheat (hay bales) cereal. He likes to go ice fishing and bowling. His favorite food is blueberries, favorite holidays are St. Patrick's Day and Christmas, favorite color is light green, favorite season is summer, favorite sports are football and basketball, and his favorite subject is phy ed. If Brayden could have a super power, he would choose teleportation or invisibility. He told us about his family, shared some of his special possessions, and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!
