Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "How can others inspire us?" People who are courageous, or brave and helpful can inspire us. When we feel inspired we want to help others too. The texts we read included "My Grandpa", "Ginger's Fingers", "The Giant", "Captain's Log", "The Winningest Woman of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race", "The Brave Ones", and "Narcissa". These were all poems. We worked on the genre: narrative and free verse poetry, the comprehension skill: theme, the literary elements: repetition and rhyme, and the vocabulary strategy: metaphor. We reviewed our prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Our grammar lessons taught us about irregular past tense verbs, and our spelling words had the soft sounds of c and g.

Math:
This week we started Unit 8 which will teach us about fractions. Fraction notation is a way to express equal parts of a whole. A fraction has two parts. The denominator names the number of equal parts into which the whole (the ONE) has been divided. The numerator names the number of those equal parts being used or considered. We identified fractions as names for parts of regions and as names for parts of sets. We completed explorations which included using pattern blocks to identify fractional parts. We created number-line posters to help us compare and count with fractions. We also did a probability experiment called "Blocks in a Bag".

Social Studies:
This week we learned about school in Ancient China. Only wealthy boys were allowed to attend school. They learned how to write using calligraphy. We learned that foods such as millet, ice cream, rice, tea, noodles, and peaches came from Ancient China. We learned about some forms of art such as paintings, porcelain, and silk which came from Ancient China. We also practiced writing with Chinese characters.

Future World Changer: Lily Wesen was our featured student this week! If they made a stamp of Lily she would be playing with her dog, Malibu. A place she would like to visit is Bora Bora because it is warm there, she could stay in a hut on the ocean, see fish through the floor, and jump into the ocean! In social studies, Lily would like to learn about other countries. A person from history she would like to meet is Ben Franklin. She told us about some of her traveling adventures with her family, swimming with dolphins and stingrays, and going on a cruise ship. Lily's favorite animal is a Corgi, favorite color is blue, favorite holiday is Christmas because she likes giving gifts, favorite season is summer, favorite foods are pizza, chips, and ice cream, and she likes to play basketball. If she could have a super power she would choose super speed to get places faster. Lily shared some special things from home, told us about her family, and answered questions from her classmates. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"! |
A couple things to note:
We still have one trimester of school this year. Many children are out of pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, etc. Some do not have scissors or crayons or colored pencils. If your child left these items at home from distance learning, please check his/her home work area and return these to school. If he/she didn't leave these at home, please replace them at your earliest convenience as we do not have enough extra supplies for all the students who need them. Thank you so much!
We will be doing a project this spring which will require a lot of newspaper. If you could please start saving newspaper and sending it to school that would be greatly appreciated!
We will continue to collect items for our local food shelf through the month of March.
