Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How can weather affect us?" Weather conditions can change and affect us every day. They can affect how we dress, what we do, and the way we live. The texts we read this week included "Joshua's Odd Neighbor", "The Big Blizzard", "Nora's Ark", "The Wind and the Sun", and our guided reading story "The Schoolhouse Blizzard". We worked on the comprehension strategy: make predictions, the comprehension skill: theme, the genre: historical fiction, and the vocabulary strategy: idioms. Our grammar lessons focused on adjectives that compare, and our spelling words had consonant + le syllables. We also took our reading MCA tests this week. |
Math: This week we reviewed numerous concepts for our upcoming math MCA test including elapsed time, counting back change, graphing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, equivalent number sentences, fractions, geometry, and story problems. We will be taking the math MCA tests next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. |
Science: This week we learned that animals live many places on Earth. A trait that helps an animal meet its needs in the place where it lives is called an adaptation. Some adaptations are inherited from animal parents. Webbed feet and the shape of teeth or beaks are examples of adaptations. We learned that animals can protect themselves using camouflage, armor, mimicry, or poison. Behaviors are things that animals do. Some of these are instincts while others are learned. Some animals have an instinct to migrate or to hibernate when the seasons change. We can learn about animals from the past by studying fossils. The children will be taking their test on the animal unit next week. We started our paper mache animal projects this week (messy, but fun!), and are continuing to work on our animal research papers. |

Quinn Selix was our featured student this week! She would like to visit Los Angeles, California because it sounds fun! Quinn would like to learn more about the presidents in social studies. A person from history she would like to meet is Abraham Lincoln because he stopped slavery. If they made a stamp of Quinn it would feature her coral water bottle. Quinn's favorite subject is reading, favorite food is chicken alfredo, favorite colors are black, gray, and white, favorite season is summer, favorite holiday is Christmas so she can see her cousins, and her favorite sport is basketball. She likes to jump on the trampoline, shared her cast from her broken arm, and showed the class her large shell and bag of sea glass as well as her camera. If she could have a super power, she would choose invisibility so she wouldn't have to do things she didn't want to do. She told us about her family and her dog, Boomer, and answered questions from her classmates. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!

Literacy: This week our essential questions was "How can learning about animals help you respect them?" The more we know about animals, the more we can do to help them. We can help keep them safe and provide other requirements or things they need to survive. The texts we read included "Respect for the Florida Panther", "Butterflies Big and Small", "Alligators and Crocodiles", and "The Monkey and the Crocodile". We worked on the comprehension strategy: reread, the comprehension skill: compare and contrast, the genre: expository text, and the vocabulary strategy: context clues. Our grammar lessons focused on adverbs that compare, and our spelling words contained r-controlled vowel syllables. |
Math: We are currently working in Unit 10 which will teach us more about measurement and data. We reviewed tools to measure distance, practiced measuring, and found different names for measurements. We learned about weight, volume, and mass, and did an experiment with four objects to compare them. We also learned about capacity and made a "Gallon Guy or Gal". We reviewed the median of sets of data, and learned how to find the mean or average of the data. We reviewed and interpreted pictographs and used the information to create bar graphs. |

We worked on finishing our animal research reports and paper mache projects and put them in the display case in the school lobby. The children can be very proud of their hard work and accomplishments! As soon as everyone has finished with the final copy of their paper, we will share the reports with the class and I will take pictures of each student with his/her report and project.

Wyatt Christopherson was our featured student this week! He would like to visit Hawaii because he thinks it would be fun there. In social studies Wyatt would like to learn more about the oceans. There is nobody from history that he would like to meet. If they made a stamp for him, it would have a turtle on it. Wyatt's favorite color is orange, favorite subject is math, favorite season is fall because he likes to play in the leaves, favorite holiday is Christmas, favorite food is pizza, favorite animals are a giraffe and a dinosaur, and his favorite sport is baseball. If Wyatt could have a superpower, he would choose invisibility so he could go to lots of different places. Wyatt shared some of his dinosaur things with the class. He also told us about his family, three dogs, and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!

We were able to visit the petting zoo outside Albany Elementary on Thursday of this week. There were some adult animals as well as baby animals. We saw cows, donkeys, bunnies, puppies, kitties, and goats. We also walked over to see the tractors that came to school and learned some things about farm safety.
Please return your CREW summer learning forms to school by May 21st if your child is planning to attend. Thank you!
