Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "What do good citizens do?" Being a good citizen means helping other people. It means following the rules and being respectful of others. Good citizenship helps make a community safe. The texts we read included "Jimmy Carter: A Good Citizen", "Dolores Huerta: Growing Up Strong", "Elizabeth Leads the Way: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Right to Vote", and "Susan B. Anthony Takes Action!" We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: author's point of view, the genre: biography, and the vocabulary strategy: prefixes and suffixes. Our grammar lessons focused on possessive pronouns and our spelling words had inflectional endings y to i.

Math:
We spent a lot of time this week practicing and solving 2 and 3 digit by 1 digit multiplication problems using both the partial products and traditional algorithms. We applied this to solving "shopping at the stock up sale" problems. We learned how to find the factors of numbers by using factor rainbows, and played a new game called "Factor Bingo". We also learned what a prime number is. In addition, we practiced accurately drawing and measuring lines.

Science:
This week we learned that the roots of a plant hold it in the ground, take in water and minerals from the soil, and taproots can store food for the plant. Stems hold up the leaves, flowers, and fruits of a plant. They also move water and minerals from the roots to the leaves. Sometimes stems protect the plant. Flowers make the fruits and seeds for the plant. We learned that bees, other animals, and wind are needed to pollinate a flower so it can make seeds. We also learned the differences between deciduous and coniferous trees. The vegetable, flower, and grass seeds we planted are growing nicely and are fun to watch!

Future World Changer:
Tanner Steffes was our featured student this week! Tanner would like to learn about the states and continents in social studies. A person from history he would like to meet is Leonardo da Vinci. He would like to visit Japan to see the cool buildings there. Tanner likes to create things with Legos, play basketball, go to Monster Jam, and gaming. He also collects Pokemon cards. If Tanner could have a super power, he would choose teleportation so he could get to places faster. His favorite car is a Bugatti, favorite subject is math, favorite color is black, favorite sports are basketball and football, and his favorite season is summer because he likes to go swimming. Tanner told us about his family and his dog and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!
