Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "What choices are good for us?" We make a variety of decisions every day. Making smart choices takes a lot of practice. Smart choices help us lead healthy lives. The texts we read included "Three Wishes", "Nail Soup", "The Real Story of Stone Soup", "Healthful Food Choices", and several other versions of the story "Stone Soup". We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: point of view, the genre: folktale, and the vocabulary strategy: root words. Our grammar lessons taught us about linking verbs, and our spelling words had the variant vowel sounds of u.

Math:
This week we reviewed the characteristics of polygons and learned the difference between regular and irregular polygons. We also learned to identify, draw and measure angles. We learned that when two sides match they have symmetry. We practiced making sides of various images symmetrical. We also learned that congruent figures have exactly the same size and shape, but they can be turned in different directions.

Science:
We reviewed facts about the planets, worked on our individual planet research, and started our research projects. The children were given a choice in how to present their research. Some chose to make a trifold display, some a diorama, a poster, a mobile, and others chose to do a Google Slides presentation. We hope to finish these on Friday so they can be shared with classmates next week. Our science test on the Solar System has been moved to next Tuesday to give the children more time to finish their research projects. They have notes as well as a study guide in their green notebooks to help them prepare for this test.

Future World Changer:
Natalya Goulet was our "Future World Changer" this week. Places Natalya would like to visit are Australia and India to see the animals there. A person from history she would like to meet is Albert Einstein because he is a famous scientist. She would also like to learn about other famous scientists! Natalya's favorite food is stuffed crust pizza, her favorite color is black, her favorite animal is a wolf, her favorite seasons are summer and fall, her favorite subject is math, and her favorite holiday is Christmas. If she could choose a super power she would choose to have teleportation or invisibility. Natalya told us about her family and answered questions from her classmates. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!

Next week will be a three day school week for us, therefore we will not be having a spelling test. We will work on a new writing project, share our planet research, and finish our math unit on geometry. We will have our Valentine's Day party on Wednesday, February 10th. A class list was sent home with your child today. As a reminder, due to Covid the children will not be allowed to attach treats to their Valentines or bring treats in for the party. The school will provide a treat for each child during our party. We made Valentine's Day bags in school on Friday, so your child will not need to make or bring one from home. Please contact me if you have any questions.
