Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How do you decide what's important?" Spending time with people and learning new things can be more valuable than treasure to many people. Wealth is not always money, sometimes wealth is the people we know and the things we learn. Healthy habits and sharing with others are important too. The texts we read included "Pandora Finds a Box", "Athena and Arachne", "King Midas and the Golden Touch", and "Carlos's Gift". We worked on the comprehension strategy: make predictions, the comprehension skill: theme, the genre: myth/drama, and the vocabulary strategy: root words. Our grammar lessons taught us about adjectives and articles, and our spelling words had the prefixes un-, re-, pre-, and dis-. |
Math: We did more work with 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems using both the partial-products and traditional algorithms. We also investigated positive and negative numbers and solved number stories using them. We completed the Unit 9 review to strengthen the concepts we learned, and took the end of unit test. These will be graded and sent home next week. |
Science: This week we started learning about animals. All animals need water, oxygen, food, and shelter. Animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are vertebrates (have backbones). Animals including sea jellies, worms, mollusks, and arthropods are invertebrates (do not have backbones). There are many more invertebrates than vertebrates on Earth. We learned about animal life cycles. Some animals look similar to their parents when they are born, and others grow and change before they become adults. Each child chose an animal to research. They checked out resources from the Media Center and were introduced to online resources as well. The children received an outline and started working on their animal research report this week. |
Future World Changer:
Vanessa Shay was our featured student this week. If they made a stamp with Vanessa on it she would have colored hair. In social studies she would like to learn about where people live and what they believe in. A person from history she would like to meet is Abraham Lincoln. Vanessa would like to visit Australia. If she could have a super power she would choose invisibility so she could go places where she's not supposed to be. Vanessa likes giraffes, horses, and pigs. She has a hoverboard which she likes to ride with her brother. Vanessa's favorite colors are pink, blue, and purple. She likes Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse books. Her favorite season is winter because that's when her birthday and Christmas take place. Vanessa's favorite food is pizza, favorite subjects are reading and science, and favorite sports are basketball and volleyball. She shared some of her special things and pictures, told us about her family, and answered questions from her classmates. She is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!

We celebrated Earth Day this week! We also celebrated filling the PAWsitive Pride Huskie House on Friday with a "Day of Play". The children had fun visiting and playing with friends for part of the afternoon on Friday.
