Literacy: Our essential question this week was "What are different kinds of energy?" We use some types of energy that are traditional, like fossil fuels, which are nonrenewable. We can also use alternative energy sources that are better for the environment, like the Sun and wind, which are renewable. The texts we read included "Using Power", "Here Comes Solar Power", "It's All in the Wind", and "Power for All". We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: cause and effect, the genre: expository text, and the vocabulary strategy: homophones. Our grammar lessons focused on pronoun-verb contractions, and our spelling words had open syllables. |
Math: We applied our division skills by calculating different amounts of money to be "shared" between different numbers of people. We also solved division story problems and learned to determine if the remainder or decimal portion of the answer was needed to answer the problem. We practiced "What's My Rule?" problems as well as more multiplication problems involving 2 and 3 digit numbers multiplied by a 1 digit number. We then moved on to learning to multiply a 2 digit by 2 digit number using both the partial-products and traditional algorithms. There are still many children who are not confident with their basic math facts. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her facts on a daily basis. |
Science: This week we learned how new plants grow. Seeds can be scattered by wind, water, being carried by animals, or being eaten by animals. When the right conditions are in place, these seeds will grow into new plants. We learned the life cycle of a plant: 1. seeds in fruit 2. germinating seed 3. seedling 4. adult plant with seeds. We also learned that some plants from the past are extinct, while others are still alive today. We can learn about plants from the past by looking at fossils. We played a Kahoot to review our unit on plants, and took our end of unit test on Thursday. We also brought our grass seed "pets" home to care for and give their hair a trim as needed. |
Future World Changer: Noah Bartkowicz was our featured student this week! A person from history he would like to meet is Jackie Robinson because he was a good baseball player and Noah likes baseball. In social studies, Noah would like to learn more about Donald Trump. Brazil is the place Noah would like to visit. Noah likes wrestling, fishing, and playing with Legos. His favorite color is black, favorite food is spaghetti, favorite season is winter because he likes to drive snowmobile, favorite animal is a dog, and favorite subject is reading. If Noah could have a super power, he would choose invisibility so he could sneak out of school. Noah told us about his family, shared some of his special things, and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"! |
