Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How can problem solving lead to new ideas?" Problem solving can lead to new ideas, and the solution might be an invention. Inventions make our lives better. Some inventions help us learn; other inventions entertain us. The texts we read included "Chester Greenwood and His Cold Ears", "Mary Anderson's Great Invention", "All Aboard! Elijah McCoy's Steam Engine", "Lighting the World", and our guided reading story "The Amazing Benjamin Franklin". We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: cause and effect, the genre: biography, and the vocabulary strategy: metaphors. Our grammar lessons focused on predicates, and our spelling words taught us different ways to make the long a sound. Please remind your child to prepare for Speak-Up next week by creating a drawing or a model of an invention and answering the questions on the pink Speak-Up sheet. |
Math: This week we used parts-and-total diagrams, change-to-more and change-to-less diagrams, and quantity-quantity-difference diagrams to solve mathematical number stories. We started our national high/low temperatures project. We also reviewed how to round numbers using "The Rounding Rap", made ballpark estimates by rounding, and solved multi digit addition and subtraction problems by using the partial-sums, traditional, and trade-first algorithms. The children are continuing develop their fact fluency by working on Moby Max. |
Social Studies:
We started learning about symbols of the United States this week. We spent time researching the U.S. Flag, the Liberty Bell, the Bald Eagle, and the Statue of Liberty. We wrote down some interesting facts in our notebooks and watched a video on these four U.S. symbols. We will continue to learn about more U.S. symbols next week.
