Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "How are people able to fly?" People have wanted to fly for hundreds of years. Thanks to many inventors, there are lots of ways they can! People can cross the country in tiny planes, huge passenger jets, or colorful hot air balloons. Helicopters take small groups from here to there. Some adventurers fly solo high above the Earth! The texts we read included "Fly Like a Bird", "Firsts in Flight", "Hot Air Balloons", "Bellerophon and Pegasus", and "The Future of Flight". We worked on the comprehension strategy: reread, the comprehension skill: cause and effect, the genre: expository text, and the vocabulary strategy: multiple-meaning words. Our grammar lessons focused on complex sentences, and our spelling words were homophones.

Math: This week we worked on estimating and rounding to answer mathematical questions that don't require an exact answer as well as those that do. We also continued to work with extended multiplication and division facts and puzzles, reviewed the concepts we learned in Unit 7, and took our end of unit test. These will be corrected and sent home next week. We had fun solving some of our 100 Day puzzles and will continue to work on them as time allows. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication and division facts daily to strengthen fact fluency. |
Social Studies:
We learned about that the geography of China has rivers, forests, hills, mountains and deserts. We also learned about Ancient China family life. As many as five generations lived together in homes, including aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents, cousins, and siblings. The oldest man had the highest position of authority and made all the family decisions. Women and children were expected to be respectful of men and elders.

Future World Changer:
Aaron Linn was our featured student this week! If they made a stamp of Aaron he would be with his cousins. A person from history he would like to meet would be his grandpa. In social studies Aaron would like to learn more about the U.S. Flag. A place he would like to visit is Mexico because it is warm there. Aaron likes cars, biking, golfing, and building with Lincoln Logs and Legos. If he could have a super power he would choose teleportation so he could go to Iowa to see his cousins. His favorite food is watermelon, favorite color is red, favorite sport is golf, favorite season is summer, favorite animal is a giraffe, and his favorite book is Little Blue Truck. Aaron told us about his family and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!
