Literacy:
Our essential question this week was "Why do people immigrate to new places?" Many immigrants dreamed about new jobs. They felt there were many new opportunities in America. They believed their lives would be better. The texts we read included "Our Story Cloth", "Sailing to America", "The Castle on Hester Street", and "Next Stop, America!" We worked on the comprehension strategy: make predictions, the comprehension skill: theme, the genre: historical fiction, and the vocabulary strategy: similes. Our grammar lessons focused on singular and plural nouns, and our spelling words had the long sound of e. The students are bringing directions home for their next Speak Up which aligns with learning about immigrants. (bright pink sheet) Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your help with this Speak Up.

Math:
This week we reviewed the concepts of perimeter and area with numerous different tasks including designing "Area Robots". We also reviewed measuring to the nearest inch, 1/2 inch/ 1/4 inch, centimeter, and 1/2 centimeter and transferring the data from a line plot to a bar graph - then identifying the maximum, minimum, range, and median of the data. We reviewed making ballpark estimates and solving multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. We took our end of Unit 3 test on Thursday, and will start Unit 4 next week which will focus on learning the fact families for multiplication and division. Please remind your child to continue working on Fact Fluency on Moby Max whenever time allows.

Social Studies:
We read about and discussed ways that people can get involved in their community. We played a Kahoot game to review our unit on Government. We took our Government test on Friday on Google Classroom rather than using paper and pencil. The children also enjoyed exploring the White House and taking an interactive tour of the Statue of Liberty. These links are both posted on my Social Studies Google Classroom if the kids would like to do more learning and exploring.

I started this update before I received the news that we will be starting distance learning next week. While we have been preparing the children for this possibility since the beginning of the school year, the reality is still challenging for all of us. We will spend some time today and Monday reviewing how to use some of the tools the children may need while they are learning from a distance. We will also practice using Google Meet and keep our fingers crossed that our technology will work just as it should. This will be a new experience for me as well as the children, but we will learn and succeed together! The children are familiar with Google Classroom and how to find the resources and assignments they need. Google Classroom will be used even more during distance learning. Please check your email for updates on distance learning plans as time goes on, and feel free to contact me with any questions along our journey. Be safe and well everyone!
