Literacy: Our essential question this week was "How do teams work together?" There are many different kinds of teams. Team members must trust each other and communicate well. Teamwork gets the job done! The texts we read included "Firefighters: Teamwork Counts", "Rescue Dogs Save the Day", "Wildfires", "Firefighting Heroes", and "Windy Gale and the Great Hurricane". We worked on the comprehension strategy: ask and answer questions, the comprehension skill: author's point of view, the genre: expository text, and the vocabulary strategy: sentence clues. Our grammar lessons focused on pronoun-verb agreement, and our spelling words had closed syllables with short vowel sounds. Please continue to encourage your child to read at home on a daily basis. |
Math: This week we worked on extended multiplication and division facts. We used the adult weights of North American animals posters to solve mathematical word problems involving multiplication. We learned to multiply two and three digit numbers by a one digit number using the partial-products algorithm and the traditional algorithm. We also explored geoboard areas, learned about fractions of regions, and measured and drew accurate line segments. Please continue to encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication/division facts at home on a daily basis. |
Science:
We started our unit on plants this week! We learned that plants have four main parts: leaves, roots, stems, and flowers. They need food, air, water, and space to live and grow. Leaves make food for the plant through a process called photosynthesis. They also balance the amount of water in the plant and can protect it from being eaten. We planted flowers, grass, and some vegetable seeds.

Future World Changer:
Colton Ferguson was our featured student this week! If they made a stamp with Colton on it, he would be smiling! A person from history he would like to meet is Abraham Lincoln. In social studies he would like to learn how the USA became a country. Colton would like to visit Mexico because it is hot there. Colton has a dog, cat, and hamster. He likes to go fishing, and likes to play hockey. He would like to play college hockey when he grows up. Colton's favorite food is pizza, favorite color is red, favorite subject is math, and his favorite holiday is Christmas. If he could have a super power he would choose invisibility. Colton likes to play games with his family, play outside with his dog, and jump on the trampoline. He told us about his family, and answered questions from his classmates. He is sure to be a "Future World Changer"!
